Vrbnik and the precious field from a bird’s eye view
The eight-kilometre circular hiking trail ‘Beneath Mali Hlam’ requires a medium level of fitness to enjoy its gentle ascent and all the curiosities of Vrbnik’s hinterland. It leads from the rocky plateau in the eastern part of the island to the fertile Vrbnik field. Start in Vrbnik, the birthplace of the Glagolitic tradition and superb wine, with almost a thousand years of history that has inspired many artists. Take a photo in one of its narrow alleys or surrounded by green vineyards – it will be pure art for sure!
As you climb the macadam path to the Lokva area, idyllic views of the sea and coastline will begin to unfold. The karst terrain is dotted with ponds, once an important source of water for livestock, now a silent witness to a traditional way of life, worth preserving as an invaluable habitat for amphibians, insects and aquatic plants. On the way up to the Hlam peak you will be rewarded with an amazing view of the field where Vrbnik Žlahtina is grown. Krk’s most famous grape variety, which produces the ‘golden drops’, is the fruit of enormous efforts by local farmers and has been their source of livelihood for centuries. Its refreshing taste and aroma, enriched with floral notes of sorb, immortelle and apple, make it truly unique.
Breathe in the scents of Mediterranean herbs and enjoy a relaxing time in the field of vineyards, far from the tourist meccas. Then take the last section of the trail down to the centre of Vrbnik, where you can continue your gourmet adventure in a local restaurant, konoba or wine cellar.
