This circular hiking trail in the hinterland of Vrbnik starts from the hamlet of Garica and guarantees an authentic countryside experience. It is ideal for easy hiking and trekking, as well as for exploring the island’s flora and fauna in a relaxed atmosphere.

Set off on a hiking adventure straight from the heart of the island – the hamlet of Garica. The square in front of the Church of St Peter the Apostle is a central meeting point for locals and visitors alike. The church was built in 1793 using the material left over from the former church in Kampelje, which dates back to the 12th century. The feast of Petrovo takes place every year on 29 June, when the locals gather for a mass and organise a celebration in honour of St Peter, their patron saint and man of faith and hope.

The first part of the trail takes you along an asphalt road towards Stoza, just below the peak of St Chrysogonus, 254 metres above the sea. One look alone at Garica and the villages around Vrh, the bay of Punat, the fertile field of Vrbnik, the islands of Cres and Plavnik and the islet of Kormat make the whole trip worthwhile. Where a prehistoric castle once stood, there are now the remains of the medieval Church of St Chrysogonus. Judging by its Romanesque features, it dates from the 12th or 13th century. As you pass it, the asphalt road soon turns to macadam and leads you to the Gradec Castle, once home to the famous Counts of Krk – the Frankopans.

A lovely walk through the woods takes you to the next elevated area – Kolmanica, 190 metres above the sea. It boasts ancient drystone walls and stunning views. A path through dense scrub, olive groves and clearings leads down to Kampelje and back to Garica. This mainly agricultural area is now an attractive rural tourism destination.
