Bauxite mines with a view of the sea
This circular trail near Stara Baška will take you through some of the most hidden and beautiful coves in the southwest of the island of Krk, which hide the remains of mining activities. Unspoilt nature, steep coastal cliffs and beautiful panoramic views of the sea and the surrounding islands will take your breath away. Add to that the history of bauxite mining, and you have one more reason to explore this trail.
It starts at the Škrila campsite and leads to the famous Oprna beach, which many consider one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. The descent to the beach is a steep path through rocks and bush, but it is well worth the effort as Oprna offers crystal clear sea and unspoilt nature. Continue along the coast to the coves of Mali and Veli Pečen, above which you will notice strange cavities in the rock. Historical sources speak of bauxite mines being mined here at the time of World War I. In times of severe economic crisis and lack of money, working in the mines helped the local population survive. Records show that more than 250 islanders worked there. Apart from men who used to work here to avoid conscription, most of workers were women and even children.
After peeking into the mine shaft, descend to Veli Pečen Cove and continue exploring the hidden pebble beaches and coves of Drenova, Pokriva and Lišičak. Then climb to Velo Čelo, which offers an incredible panoramic view of the azure waters of the Kvarner Bay and the cliffs that plunge steeply into the sea. Capture the moment with your camera and slowly descend to Oprna beach, where you can take a dip in the sea before returning to the Škrila campsite. For the more adventurous, there is a more challenging alternative section.
The best time for hiking is spring and autumn, when the temperatures are more pleasant, but don’t forget to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. This trail offers the perfect combination of adventure, unspoilt nature and secluded beaches. It is ideal for those who like to explore lesser-known parts of the island of Krk.
