Discovering the story of island farmers
Set off on a circular trail dedicated to people who have been blessed with a gentle nature, care and diligence. It offers an unforgettable experience of the Mediterranean, with a unique blend of unspoilt nature, rich history and spectacular views.
The trail begins in the centre of Punat, near the tourist office. It leads along the waterfront, where you can watch the local boats gently swaying on the blue sea. Then you turn into the charming Klančić Street. On the way, visit the Toš Gallery with its stone walls and an original millstone. It is a unique setting in which renowned Croatian and international artists exhibit their works. A few steps away is a small square with the Church of St Rocco and St Sebastian, built as a vow by the people of Punat to stop the deaths during the cholera epidemic that ravaged the island in 1855.
After crossing the main road, the trail slowly climbs through olive groves, offering beautiful views of Puntarska Draga and the islet of Košljun. With its Franciscan monastery, the islet looks almost magical in the middle of the bay, surrounded by crystal clear sea. As you continue your journey, you will pass a ‘komarda’ – a traditional farmer’s and shepherd’s dwelling built of corbelled dry stone with a characteristic roof of stone slabs called ‘škrile’. These buildings are masterpieces of folk architecture, testifying to the skill and ingenuity of the locals. The trail continues past the Kaljužina pond, a small natural lake that often dries up in the summer but is still an important part of the local ecosystem. From here, the trail climbs to the highest point – Veli Vrh (542 m above sea level). Reward yourself with a spectacular view of the bay and the nearby peaks and islands, relaxing in peace and quiet.
After enjoying the panoramic view, descend along a rocky path back to Punat. It is demanding and suitable for those in a better physical condition.
