Stara Baška, situated at the foot of the steep slopes of the southwestern plateau of the island of Krk, was first mentioned in the 14th century under the name of Kraj. Its present name, Stara Baška, has been in use since the second half of the 17th century. Until the road from Punat was built in the 1980s, Stara Baška could only be reached by boat or along shepherd’s paths. It is thanks to these paths that you have the opportunity to discover its incredible hinterland.

‘The Story of Mali and Veli’ circular trail will take you to Veli Hlam, which offers fantastic views. The trail begins at the entrance to Stara Baška, where a gentle climb along a rocky path begins. There you will see some pine trees, but as you climb and leave the village behind, the vegetation becomes sparser. On the way up, you first pass a cave-like pit and, if you continue along the preserved path, you reach another of the thirty or so pits near Stara Baška, where bauxite was mined around 1915. The path is a little steeper until you reach the Kanjina area, where it is followed by a gentler stretch with numerous drystone walls and ‘mrgari’ – drystone structures used for the seasonal gathering and sorting of sheep. These examples of folk architecture show how important sheep farming was on Krk. Before reaching the highest point, you will pass the Spuhotina pond.

When you reach the top of Veli Hlam (482 m), you will be greeted by a magnificent view of the other Kvarner islands and the peaks of Velebit. Take a break and relax. Then continue along the ridge towards the Vratudih pass, from where you can enjoy views of Baška and the Baška valley. From the Vratudih pass, descend first to a double pond called Šibenik, and then along an easy macadam road to Stara Baška. When you reach the tarmac, the route will take you through the centre of the town back to the starting point. If you have more time, we recommend that you extend the tour and turn left towards the Late Antique ruins of ‘Na kraj mira’ and the remains of the medieval church of St Jerome.
