A story of times gone by, the ingenuity and adaptability of the people of Soline
A walk through the Dobrinj area offers an authentic experience to all history and culture buffs, as well as outdoor enthusiasts. This 12.7-kilometre circular trail starts in Čižići, a tourist village whose name may be a little difficult to pronounce, but do not worry. You are about to embark on a walk through enchanting landscapes reflecting long traditions and natural sites that will exceed all your expectations.
Start your tour at the old perilo (public washhouse) on the coast, once the central point of everyday life. Perilo pod topolom (public washhouse under the poplar tree) hides numerous stories told over the years by local women who used to soak and wash their clothes there all year round, even in the harshest weather. Another ‘public secret’ is the story of the young men who made vows to their sweethearts before leaving for America in search of a better life. With a dose of nostalgia for the old times, make your way through Soline Cove, down the long sandy beach. Owing to its ideal geographical position and the action of the sun and wind, this area has long been home to salt pans.
From Soline, the path climbs to Dobrinj, the historical and cultural centre of the Dobrinj area. There you will come across threshing floors – drystone structures where farmers used to thresh their grain, bearing witness to the hard work of the local people. It is a perfect place to take a break and contemplate the past. Be sure to visit the Ethnographic Museum in the heart of Dobrinj and the fascinating stone head – Maskeron, shrouded in an aura of mystery. The Dobrinj bell tower is another landmark worth visiting, as it offers a magnificent view of the surrounding area. Legend has it that it was destined to collapse, but it still stands tall as a symbol of resilience.
The next section is a descent along a forest path through Klanice towards Sužan, where there is a viewpoint with an incredible view of the cove and the islet of Veli Školjić, also known as Kirinčić. The view of the distant peaks of Gorski kotar and Mount Velebit invites you to reflect on the stories you have learnt along the way. On your return to Čižići, stop off at Meline beach – the bathing season is long there, so why not take a refreshing dip or wrap yourself in the healing mud to boost your immune system.
